Schmack BioEnergy Announces Acquisition of BTU LLC - Alan Johnson, P.E. Joins BTU LLC as Vice President

Schmack BioEnergy (Schmack), a Cleveland, Ohio, based waste management and renewable energy company, announced today that it has acquired Biogas Technologies Unlimited, LLC (BTU), a biogas upgrade technology company.  

Biogas is recycled from municipal biomass, farm waste, food and cannery residuals, landfill methane, and alcohol & ethanol distillers’ waste.  It is composed of approximately 60% methane – the principle ingredient in natural gas.  BTU’s technology will clean, separate and dry Schmack’s biogas.  Resulting methane can be piped directly into local natural gas utility lines, used to generate electricity and heat, or further compressed and used as motor vehicle quality fuel (CNG).  

Schmack President Mel Kurtz says, “BTU’s technology is unique because it focuses on cleaning smaller volumes of biogas – up to 2,000 CFM.  Integrating BTU’s technology into Schmack plants in North America will allow us to turn organic waste into electricity, motor vehicle fuel, and pipeline quality fuel while reducing our dependence on foreign sources.” 

To head-up this new division, Schmack has hired Alan Johnson, P.E. to focus on integrating BTU into the biogas marketplace.  Johnson has over thirty years of manufacturing experience with a focus on product development and customer relationship management.  “I am excited about the opportunity to be involved in the renewable energy field with a company that converts a waste by-product into energy,” says Johnson.      

BTU’s technology will be sold in the biogas marketplace with units available off the shelf or within ninety days with performance warranties.  Biogas is a renewable energy source that can affordably supplement 30% of the traditional fossil fuels used domestically.
